Details

John Gutch began his Colonial Service career as an Administrative Officer in the Gold Coast, Africa in 1928, and served in Palestine and Cyrenaica before being appointed Chief Secretary of British Guiana. He held the Honiara-based position of High Commissioner of the Western Pacific between September 1955 and January 1961, replacing Robert Christopher Stafford Stanley (q.v.), and succeeded by David Trench (q.v.). He received an O.B.E and was knighted in 1957. (NS July 1955, Jan. 1961; AR 1961-1962, 69)
