Use of Imperial and Metric Systems of Measurement
The time period of the Solomon Islands Historical Encyclopaedia covers the transition from Imperial to Metric measure. The following rules have been applied. Linear measure has been converted to the Metric system, but cubic measure has not. Where it seemed important to include Imperial measures, the Metric equivalent has also been included.
- Linear Measures
- 1 mile = 1.609 kilometres
- 1 yard = 0.9144 metre
- 1 foot = 0.3048 metre
- 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres
- Square Measures
- 1 square mile = 2.5899 square kilometres
- 1 acre = 0.4047 hectares = 40.47 acres
- 1 square yard = 0.836 square metre
- 1 square foot = 0.0929 square metre = 929 square centimetres
- Weight Measures
- 1 ton = 2,240 pounds. The modern metric measure is 1 tonne which is equivalent to 1,000 kilograms or 2,204.6 pounds)
- 1 pound = 0.453 kilograms
