Guso Rato Piko was born at Rizukana village on Choiseul in 1907. After five years of primary education he became a teacher on Guadalcanal, in 1928. He worked at various churches in what was then the Western District before attending Queen Victoria School in Suva, Fiji from 1930-1931, and the Fiji School of Medicine, from which he graduated in 1935 as a Native Medical Practitioner. He then worked as a medical officer at Tulagi, Isabel and Malaita. During the Second World War, he was posted to Santa Cruz in the Eastern Solomons, beyond the area of Japanese occupation. He worked in the Central Hospital in Honiara from 1945 until he retired in 1960. (Larmour 1979b, Notes of Contributors)
