Danny Philip is from Lokuru on Rendova Island in Western Province, and was born on 5 August 1953. His mother, who died two days after his birth, suffered from poliomyelitis, which was epidemic in the Protectorate in the early 1950s. He trained as an English teacher and entered Parliament in 1984 as member for the Vona Vona, Rendova and Tetepare constituency. He served as Foreign Minister from 1995 to 1996 and again from July 2000 to June 2001. He was leader of the People's Progressive Party from 1997 to 2000, and then founded the Reform Democratic Party, of which he was leader when he became Prime Minister on 24 August 2010 after a general election.
