Henry B. Guppy, a medical doctor and naturalist, visited the Solomon Islands in 1882. He was surgeon on HMS Lark, from which was conducted a surveying voyage in the Pacific. Guppy was funded by the Royal Society of London to explore the interior of Guadalcanal, but he was prevented from so doing by illness. He published two books on his experiences: The Solomon Islands and Their Natives (1887), and The Solomon Islands: Their Geology, General Features, and Suitability for Colonization (1887).
