Stephen Cheka was born at Wanderer Bay, Guadalcanal in 1946. He was educated at All Hallows' Senior Primary School at Pawa (q.v.) on Ugi, before continuing his education at King George VI School (q.v.). He qualified as a Grade Three teacher after two years at the Teacher Training College (1966-1967) and was then employed as a government primary school teacher for five years. Cheka attended trade union courses in Fiji for two weeks in 1971 and was Secretary-General of the Solomon Islands Teachers' Association. In 1972, he spent six months at a teacher's observation course in New Zealand. In 1973, Cheka was promoted to Assistant Education Officer and he began the Garo development movement to encourage co-operative efforts to trade from the Weathercoast. He was a member of the BSIP Scouts Association, a Young Farmers Club leader and a member of the Primary Schools Social Studies Curriculum Development Committee in 1971. In 1973, Cheka became the member of the Governing Council (q.v.) for South Guadalcanal, Rennell and Bellona. (NS 6 July 1973)
