Born in 1941, Michael Aike was the first Solomon Islander to become a Catholic priest. In Papua New Guinea he completed his secondary education at St. Peter Chanel College near Rabaul and then studied theology at Madang. On 13 February 1966, he was ordained a Sub-Deacon at Rohinari, Malaita, and on the following 10 December Bishop Stuyvenberg (q.v.) ordained him as a priest in Holy Cross Cathedral (q.v.). From his ordination a large party left for Rohinari, where a thousand people attended his first mass. (NS 21 Feb. 1966, 19 Dec. 1966)
