Place: Slot, The
Details
The Slot is the name given to New Georgia Sound and Indispensible Strait by the Allies during the Second World War to describe the central geographic area between the two chains of Solomon Islands. A huge traffic in warships and aeroplanes came through this area. The Slot began at Bougainville, with Choiseul and Isabel and Malaita to the east and Vella Lavella, Kolombangara, Ranongga, Gizo, Rendova, New Georgia, Vangunu, the Russell Island and Guadalcanal to the west. Savo and the Nggela (Florida) Islands are the only substantial islands within The Slot itself.
