Ellison Suri was born in Sulafou village, Lau Lagoon, northeast Malaita. He received his secondary education at Pawa Secondary School, leaving in 1968 and working for the government for a year in Honiara. In 1970 he began his studies at Bishop Patteson Theological College, Kohimarama, Guadalcanal, and in 1973 attended an ethnomusicology course at the East West Centre in Hawai'i for six months. This included a demonstration tour to several Pacific countries visiting different cultural groups. From 1974 to 1976 he attended the Pacific Theological College in Fiji, graduating as a Bachelor of Divinity, majoring in Music. During 1978 he was an Artist in Residence at the Laucala campus of the University of the South Pacific. He then became advisor in communications to the Church of Melanesia in Solomon Islands. His thesis completed for his degree in Divinity was "Music in Worship in Ancient Lau. He was an ordained priest of the Church of Melanesia. Suri, 1979, 1980
