John Sisolo was born in 1935 in Pauoe village in north Choiseul and was educated at Sasamungga Primary School in Choiseul, and then at Goldie College at Munda. He joined the Government Medical Department in 1956 and after completing a three-year nursing training course at the Central Hospital joined the staff there. He attended courses in Fiji and London, and in Australia where he obtained a diploma in nursing education. In 1974, Sisolo went back to Fiji for a public health course and in mid-1976, as a Senior Nursing Officer, he took over the running of the Central Hospital's Nursing School. He became the Chief Nursing Officer in April 1977, and was awarded an O.B.E. that same year. (SND 17 June 1977)
