Details

Lucy Hazel Money was born on 28 July 1916, in Christchurch, New Zealand. She accepted the call to undertake missionary work for the Methodist Church in 1943, and trained to be both a maternity nurse and a deaconess. In May 1947, she left for the Solomon Islands, arriving at Choiseul in July. Money was responsible for the health and education of women and children on the island. She was in charge of the maternity ward at the hospital at Sasamungga and also cared for motherless babies. As well, she trained girls from the villages to do domestic work. Money also translated much of the Bible into the Babatana language and compiled a Babatana dictionary. Her work continued on Choiseul until 1997, when she officially retired, but she continued to work independently until ill health forced her return to New Zealand. She was awarded an M.B.E. for her services. She died in September 2005 in Waikato, New Zealand.
