Alfred Maeke was born in 1935 at Gaimali, West Tathimboko, on Guadalcanal. He was educated at the Tasimboko (Tathimboko) School and afterwards at St. Mary's School at Maravovo (q.v.) on Guadalcanal and All Hallows' School at Pawa (q.v.) on Ugi. On leaving Pawa, he taught for some years at Tathimboko School before leaving to become a clerk on Berande plantation. He joined the BSIP Agriculture Department in 1959, where he was first a copra grader and then a clerk in the head office. He left after three years and traded for some time before joining the Guadalcanal Council as an executive officer, a post he still held in 1970 when he was elected as member for West Guadalcanal in the Governing Council. He was married with three children. (NS 15 June 1970)
