Joe Gilvelte was from Mota Lava Island in the Banks Group in Vanuatu. He and Barnabas Serbas were the first Melanesian Mission (q.v.) missionaries in north Malaita. Gilvelte married a woman from Makira, and was ordained a deacon in 1917 and a priest in 1918. After a few years back in the Banks Group he returned to teach at All Hallows' School at Pawa (q.v.), in 1926, and died in 1927. (Fox 1958, 160)
