Biographical entry: Edinburgh, Duke of
Details
H.R.H. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth (q.v.) first visited the Solomon Islands from 18 and 22 March 1959. The royal yacht Britannia visited Gizo, Honiara, Auki, and Graciosa Bay in Santa Cruz, before sailing to the Gilbert and Ellice Colony. Much pomp and ceremony greeted his landing in Honiara, but the Solomon Islander crowd remained absolutely silent as their way of showing respect for a great man. He came again in March 1971, also on the royal yacht, and spent three days in the Solomon Islands, but visited only Honiara and north Malaita. On a third, 1974 visit he was accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (q.v.), Princess Anne, Captain Mark Phillips and Lord Louis Mountbatten. (NS Mar. 1959, 16 Dec. 1970, 30 Jan. 1971, 31 Mar. 1971; AR 1971, 5, 1974, 7; Montfort 1994, 97)
