Concept: Rice

Details

Agricultural officers of the Protectorate experimented with growing rice to find the varieties most suitable to the Solomons. In December 1963, the Commonwealth Development Corporation leased 115 acres of land near Ilu Farm to establish forty-five acres of dry rice and forty-five of wet rice fields for mechanized rice production. Thirty acres of each crop would be planted at any one time, leaving the other area available for crop rotation, mainly with soya beans. The first four acres of rice was harvested in October 1964. Seventy acres were harvested in mid-1965, yielding about 1.5 tons per acre, and during that year another five hundred acres were prepared for planting.
