Place: Prince Philip Highway
Details
With his consent, in 1966 the main Guadalcanal road from Honiara to Lungga via Kukum was named the Prince Philip Highway to commemorate the 1959 visit by the Prince, the first member of the British Royal family to come to Honiara. The continuation of the road within Honiara was known as Mendana Avenue, from the Mataniko River to Rove Creek. On the west side of Honiara as far as Poha River the road became Tadai (pronounced Tan-die) Highway. (NS 7 Apr. 1966)
