Event: Masta Liu Project
Details
Malaitans introduced the verb liu (q.v.) into Solomon Islands Pijin. It means to 'hang around' or stroll or loiter casually, and liu is also a noun labelling those who do this in towns. The Masta Liu Project was begun in Honiara in the 1970s, operating from the Community Centre. It educated unemployed youths in gardening, cutting grass, wharf work and housework, and carpentry and electrician skills. They also learned to grow vegetables. As part of their training, the boys engaged in boxing, basketball, soccer, cross-country running and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. (SND 26 Aug. 1977)
