Concept: Guadalcanal Trans-Insular Road Plans

Details

Using the old American wartime tracks as their basis, many roads began to open up postwar Guadalcanal, connecting villages to the main north coast road. Discussions began in 1963 for a road across the island; it would pass from Honiara to Tinahula near Gold Ridge, then to Kuma and across to the other coast. In 1964, the government concentrated its efforts on improving the road between Mara and Avuavu on the Weathercoast, and in 1965 priority was give to the coastal road to Marovovo, as commencement of building the road to Avuavu. The trans-insular road was never completed. (NS 15 May 1963, 15 July 1963, 31 Jan. 1964, 15 June 1965)
