Details
The British Red Cross Society was the major voluntary aid association in the Solomon Islands during the 1960s. Local women joined the Society, which held classes in Honiara, Auki, Gizo and Kirakira. It provided material assistance to the poor and sick in the form of food, milk, tools, sewing materials and wheel chairs designed for the village environment. In 1962, a permanent Red Cross building was opened in Honiara, designed to serve as a model maternal and child welfare clinic. (AR 1961-1962, 53)
