Corporate entry: Atoifi Hospital, Uru, Malaita

Details

The Seventh-day Adventist Mission ratified its plans for an extensive hospital at Uru Harbour, east Kwaio, Malaita in 1963, which they expected to open in 1964. Atoifi Hospital finally opened in 1966. In 1980, when the out-patients wing was added, it was a ninety-two-bed hospital, with a School of Nursing, a dental service, operating theatres, obstetrics facilities, and wards for medical, surgical and tuberculosis patients. Hydroelectricity was installed in 1979 and the Adventist Church built its own airfield. Although small, Atoifi is reputed to be the best hospital in the Solomon Islands.
